Early Life
Mao Zedong was born in Shaoshan village in the Hunan Province on the 26th of December, 1893. Mao's father, Mao Yichang had built up his wealth to become one of the richest farmers in Shaoshan. Mao's father was a strict disciplinarian and often beat Mao and his siblings. Mao's father had him married at the age of 13 to a 17 year old, Luo Yigu. Mao refused to acknowledge Luo as his wife and as a result of his arranged marriage, became fiercely opposed to such forced marriages. Luo was locally disgraced because of her husband's actions. She died in 1910, 4 years into the marriage.
In 1911, Mao began attending Changsha Middle School. He read constantly and became very politically conscious. World leaders such as George Washington and Napoleon Bonaparte fascinated Mao for their military prowess and nationalistic views.
Mao soon enrolled in the Fourth Normal School of Changsha and joined the school's volunteer army, an organisation that protected the school from bandits.

Significance to Korea
Mao, after winning the Chinese Revolution, became the Chairman of the People's Republic of China. Mao's government was in alliance with both Joseph Stalin and Kim Il-Sung and came to the aid of Kim when the UN began fighting back against North Korean troops and broke into North Korea. Mao feared that if the UN conquered North Korea, China was at risk of invasion. Mao had just won the revolution, and didn't want any possibility of his power being taken. Having already fought in the Chinese Revolution, though, Mao had substantial strategic knowledge and advised Kim on military tactics.
After the war, Mao also helped fund the repair of North Korea.
